Free Radical Defense

A free radical is defined as an atom or molecule that has one or more unpaired electron( s). It is this electron imbalance that leads to the high reactivityof the free radical. Free radicals cause a change in our cell's molecular structure, thereby causing damage to our tissues. Our body possesses defense mechanisms to protect itself against free radical damage. These mechanisms consist of low molecular weight free radical scavengers (vitamin A, C, E and beta-carotene) and enzyme systems (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase). Normally, these defense mechanisms can keep free radicals in check and protect the body from oxidative damage. However, exposure to certain environmental pollutants such as smoke, air or chemical pollutants, untreated drinking water, certain drugs (including alcohol), solvents plus many more can make the free radicals overwhelm the cellular defense mechanism.
